Takealot

Takealot is South Africa’s leading e-commerce marketplace, offering sales, advertising, fulfilment and support services for international sellers.

Takealot is South Africa’s leading e-commerce operator, combining direct retail sales with a marketplace open to third-party sellers. In FY2026, the Takealot Group served more than 6.2 million active customers and processed over 60 million orders across its platforms. For companies interested in the South African market, it therefore represents a particularly relevant digital sales channel, also thanks to its integrated logistics and fulfilment infrastructure.

Key Features and Services

Takealot operates both as a retailer and as a marketplace: products sold by third parties display the seller’s name under the “Sold by” label. Approved sellers can manage products, inventory, prices and assortment through the Takealot Seller Portal. The platform also provides integrated logistics services and an official Marketplace API, enabling merchants to integrate offer, order, sales, returns and shipment management with their own systems.

The standard onboarding process requires companies to submit an application containing information about their business and products. Takealot states that applications are reviewed and that candidates are contacted within 10 business days. Seller acceptance is therefore not automatic.

Revenue

In FY2026, ended 31 March 2026, Takealot.com generated USD 906 million in revenue, up 19% compared with the previous financial year. Takealot.com GMV increased by 15%, while orders grew by 18%. Overall, the Takealot Group – which also includes Mr D – generated approximately USD 1 billion in revenue and USD 2 billion in GMV.

Permitted Products

Takealot offers a broad general merchandise catalogue covering, among others, automotive products, baby products, beauty, books, electronics, IT, mobile phones, fashion, gaming, home and kitchen, sports, DIY and outdoor products. The admission of individual products to the catalogue remains subject to Takealot’s rules and approval procedures.

Certain categories are also subject to specific regulatory requirements in the South African market. For example, Takealot applies specific rules to products such as televisions, alcoholic beverages and vaping products; more generally, sellers remain responsible for the accuracy of product information and for the products they list. Italian companies should therefore verify both the eligibility of the relevant product category on the marketplace and compliance with South African regulations before exporting.

Accessibility for Italian Companies

Takealot technically supports international sellers. The official Marketplace API documentation explicitly includes the is_international parameter for seller accounts. In addition, in 2026 Takealot has dedicated Cross-Border functions, including Seller Sales Manager and Cross-Border Operations roles, while its Seller Success Network includes services designed to assist international sellers entering the South African market.

However, the seller website does not publish an official list of eligible foreign countries, nor does it provide specific conditions for companies incorporated in Italy. It is therefore not possible to state either that an Italian company is automatically eligible or that it must necessarily establish a South African legal entity. Italian companies interested in the marketplace should submit an application to Takealot, specifying their status as an international seller, and verify during onboarding the requirements relating to company documentation, payments, taxation, imports and inventory management. Cross-border service providers listed in Takealot’s official Seller Success Network may also provide operational support.

Countries and Markets

The commercial market served by Takealot.com is South Africa. The platform’s official terms provide for orders to be delivered to addresses located within South Africa or collected from Takealot Pickup Points across the country.

For an Italian company, Takealot should therefore primarily be considered a market-entry channel for the South African e-commerce market, rather than a pan-African marketplace through which consumers in several African countries can be reached directly.

Costs and Commissions

Takealot charges a monthly fee of ZAR 400 per seller account, with the possibility of cancelling the account. The amounts published by Takealot are stated excluding South African VAT. In addition to the monthly fee, the main charges include:

  • Success fees, commissions charged on sales and varying according to the product/category;
  • Fulfilment fees, related to the logistics handling of products;
  • Storage fees, applicable to inventory exceeding the free storage thresholds established by the platform.

Takealot also provides an official Fee Estimator to calculate the commissions applicable to individual sales. For an Italian seller, it is particularly important to include international transportation, import costs, potential customs duties, local taxation and the movement of goods into Takealot’s logistics network when assessing margins.

Payment Systems

Customer payments are processed directly within Takealot. The payment methods currently listed by the platform include Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club International cards, payments via PayFast and Ozow, as well as local and instalment payment solutions such as Mobicred, Payflex and PayJustNow. Google Pay, Apple Pay, Takealot.credit and, for eligible orders, Cash on Delivery are also available.

However, consumer payment methods should not be confused with seller payout arrangements: payment terms, settlement schedules and the banking details required for seller payouts are managed as part of the seller account and onboarding process. Italian companies should therefore verify these aspects directly when applying as an international seller.

Advertising

Takealot offers Retail Media and Marketplace Sponsored Product Ads, allowing brands and sellers to increase product visibility within the Takealot ecosystem. The existence of dedicated functions covering Sponsored Product Ads, performance advertising and retail media is confirmed by Takealot’s own published organisational roles.

The Seller Success Network also includes providers specialising in Sponsored Ads & Advertising. However, detailed pricing conditions and the specific advertising features available to each seller are not fully disclosed on the public marketplace registration pages and should be verified once the seller account has been activated.

Logistics Services

Logistics is one of Takealot’s main distinguishing features. Takealot manages warehousing, fulfilment, customer delivery and returns. Sellers are responsible for product availability and for transferring goods to Takealot facilities, from which the platform can subsequently manage delivery to the end customer.

The official technical documentation also provides for inventory management at seller warehouses and lead times for transferring products to a Takealot facility. For an Italian company, this means that the logistics strategy should be defined before launching on the marketplace: the company must determine how goods will be imported into South Africa, how Takealot’s logistics facilities will be supplied and which party will assume responsibilities related to import procedures and local compliance. The Seller Success Network also includes operators specialising in international logistics and cross-border services.

Customer and Seller Support

Takealot directly operates a Help Centre and Customer Support service for buyers. Its official terms also specify that sellers remain responsible for the products sold, their availability, product information and the relevant commercial documentation.

Sellers have access to the Seller Portal, which includes Seller Support. This is complemented by the Seller Success Network, an official directory of specialist service providers offering services such as account management, software integrations, advertising, training, warehousing and cross-border support. This ecosystem can be particularly useful for Italian companies requiring local assistance to enter and manage the South African market on an ongoing basis.
