The agreement recognises Unioncamere as one of the key players within the wider Italian system supporting export growth. It aims to bring an increasing number of businesses into programmes designed to help them enter and establish themselves in international markets, drawing on the extensive reach of Italy’s chambers of commerce across the country and the network of Italian Chambers of Commerce Abroad.
Unioncamere will contribute its knowledge of Italy’s business landscape and the export strengths of different regions, while the Ministry will involve the chamber of commerce network in institutional and business missions, as well as programmes promoting international expansion.
Key provisions of the agreement
Italy’s chamber of commerce system comprises 60 local chambers, with more than five million businesses registered nationally.
The Italian Business Register marks its 30th anniversary in 2026. It is regarded as the country’s most important legally recognised database of businesses.
The framework agreement between MAECI and Unioncamere is designed to strengthen cooperation between the Ministry and the chamber of commerce network in supporting the international expansion of Italian businesses. Its objectives include increasing the number of exporting companies and helping businesses develop and consolidate their presence in overseas markets. The agreement also formally recognises Unioncamere as a key player in Italy’s efforts to promote internationalisation, strengthening its involvement in initiatives led by MAECI to support exports.
As the representative and coordinating body for Italy’s chamber of commerce system, Unioncamere plays a key role in connecting public institutions with the country’s business community. Its internationalisation activities also involve Promos Italia and other agencies and special-purpose companies linked to Italy’s chambers of commerce. Working alongside Assocamerestero and its network of Italian Chambers of Commerce Abroad, Unioncamere helps businesses throughout the entire export process, from initial preparation and market development to the implementation of export initiatives and ongoing support in international markets.
The agreement establishes a long-term framework for cooperation between the two sides across the main areas of support for business internationalisation. In particular, Unioncamere will provide MAECI with its knowledge of Italy’s productive base and the export strengths of individual regions, promote internationalisation opportunities among businesses and coordinate activities carried out by the chamber of commerce network, including through Promos Italia and the Italian Chambers of Commerce Abroad.
MAECI, for its part, will make its internationalisation tools and programmes available to the chamber of commerce network and involve Unioncamere in institutional and business missions, as well as programmes aimed at companies.
Also attending the signing were Unioncamere Secretary General Giuseppe Tripoli, Assocamerestero President Mario Pozza, representatives of ICE, SIMEST, SACE and CDP, and, joining remotely, representatives of Italian chambers of commerce and Italian Chambers of Commerce Abroad.
